The
Japan Information Center (JIC) is the cultural
and public affairs section of the Consulate General
of Japan in New York. Our primary role is to promote
better understanding of Japan and Japanese culture
by providing a wide range of information, educational
services and programs to the public. The area
we serve includes New York, New Jersey, Delaware,
Maryland, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands,
West Virginia and some parts of Connecticut (Fairfield
County only). Other Japanese Consulates provide
services in areas outside of our jurisdiction.

JIC's Services
The JIC provides various services and information to the public. The main services and assistance are as follows:

Assistance to Educators and Students
To promote education about Japan and the Japanese language,
the JIC:
- distributes currently available educational materials such as posters, fact sheets, and pamphlets on Japan
- provides speakers on all aspects of Japan to elementary, junior high and high schools throughout this region
- offers a workshop providing a basic introduction to Japan for teachers as well as the general public
- makes available a collection of catalogues of Japanese universities which offer programs for international students
Information on Grants, Fellowships, and Exchange Programs
Interested students can contact the JIC for guidance in applying to the following:
- the Japanese Ministry of Education (Monkasho) scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students to study in Japan
- the Commemorative Association for the Japan World Exposition Grants
- the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program for college graduates

General Reference Services
To foster familiarity with Japan and its culture, the JIC conducts the following activities for the general public:
- distributes the newsletter "Japan Info" quarterly which introduces hot issues on various aspects of Japan as well as schedules of cultural events
- distributes press releases and act as a liaison with the media
- assists organizations sponsoring programs on Japan
- loans various Japanese cultural artifacts to schools, civic organizations, and other qualifying groups
- responds to written, telephone, and in-person inquiries about Japan
