New Fukuda Cabinet Inaugurated, Komura to become Foreign Minister
In a tightly contested vote in the Diet, Yasuo Fukuda became Japan’s 91st Prime Minister, succeeding Shinzo Abe who abruptly resigned on September 12th. As part of his new cabinet, Fukuda picked Masahiko Komura to become Japan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs.



Stronger Ties between West Virginia and Japanese Corporations
Ambassador Sakurai welcomed West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin III to New York for a meeting with Japanese corporate leaders on October 9th. West Virginia counts several major Japanese investors. The special event was a chance to further promote business ties between the Mountain State and Japan.


JAA Marks a Century of Service with Gala and “Senior Week”
The Japanese American Association of New York marked a landmark 100 years of service to the community with a gala black-tie fundraiser on September 29th. Also, JAA held “Senior Week”, a program aimed at helping the New York area’s growing population of Japanese and Japanese American seniors remain healthy, active, and independent.

The traditional arts and crafts of Japan -- from lacquerware to kimono, furniture to handmade paper -- are waiting to be discovered right here in the Big Apple. Here are some places to find them.

Kiku: The Art of the Japanese Chrysanthemum opens at the New York Botanical Garden. The Consulate opens its doors for lunchtime hours. And Ambassador Sakurai opens his residence to West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin III and representatives from Japanese corporations.

Local Centenarians Honored by Japanese Government
As part of “Respect for the Aged Day” a commendation ceremony was held to honor two residents of New Jersey who celebrated their 100th birthdays.
