2003 New York - Tokyo Friendship Amateur Ceramic Competition
From April 14 -19,
visitors and residents of New York and our
region are invited to view the final entries in
the Seventh Annual New York-Tokyo Friendship
Amateur Ceramic Competition at the Nippon
Gallery (145 West 57th Street). This goal of
this annual contest, organized by The Ceramic
Artist Friendship Association, Inc., is to
foster cultural ties between the sister cities
of Tokyo and New York by encouraging and
honoring the creativity of each city's amateur
clay artists.
Judges will select 100 of the finest works submitted -
50 from New York City and 50 from Tokyo. Each
entry is judged for its aesthetics, creativity,
originality and technical skill. The First Place
Grand Prize is a round-trip ticket to Tokyo,
contributed by All Nippon Airways.
A reception and presentation ceremony will be held on
Monday, April 14 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at
the Nippon Gallery. A total of eight prizes will
be awarded (first, second and third, three
honorable mentions and two special prizes for
functional and nonfunctional pieces).
The judges for this year's 2003 New York - Tokyo
Friendship Amateur Ceramic Competition are:

Metropolitan Museum of Art; Cora Rosevear,
Associate Curator, Museum of Modern Art; Emily
Miller, Associate Curator, Cooper Hewitt
National Design Museum; Yuko Royer, Director,
The Nippon Gallery; and Arthur Pogran, Ceramist. Honorary Chairpersons for this event are Madam Nishida,
wife of Ambassador Yoshihiro Nishida, Consul
General of Japan in New York, and the wives of
three former Consuls-General: Madam Kawamura,
Madam Karita and Madam Otsuka.
