The 22nd Upper Manhattan Auto Show was held on August 21st. This auto show, which is a part of HARLEM WEEK, celebrated its 22nd year. This year's Harlem Week has focused on relief efforts for northeastern Japan, which incurred damages from the earthquake and tsunami on March 11th. The HARLEM WEEK committee provided booths for the exhibition of Japanese automobiles in the show in order to prevent the bad effects of rumors regarding Japanese products and safety in Japan as well as concerns of a possible decline of Japan's role in global supply chains. With the cordial invitation of the Harlem communities and endorsement of the Consulate General of Japan in New York, Nissan and Honda decided to exhibit their cars in the show. This show was recognized as a part of Japan-U.S. Public-Private Partnership for Reconstruction, which was presented at the Japan-U.S. Foreign Ministers' bilateral meeting in April.

Mr. Rangel said that Japan and the U.S. are connected by a longstanding, strong relationship of trust. He added in his remarks that parts of Japan may have been damaged by the earthquake and tsunami, but our friendship, cultural connections and trade relationship have not changed. Further, he stated that on behalf of the citizens of the U.S., New York and Harlem, he sends a message to Japan. After the remarks he handed a proclamation to Mr. Yasuhisa Kawamura, Deputy Consul General of Japan in New York. Mr. Kawamura delivered a thank you message, explained the situation and reconstruction efforts in Japan, and appealed Japan's position on the recovery of the supply chain. Finally Mr. Kawamura mentioned that we, Japan and the U.S., will continue together into the future.
