2010 Foreign Minister's Commendation
On November 5, the Northeast Council of Teachers of Japanese (NECTJ) was honored with the 2010 Foreign Minister's Commendation for its contribution to the promotion of mutual understanding and cultural exchange between Japan and United States of America through Japanese language education.

New Yorkers Discover the Charms of Ishikawa
From October 4th to 9th, the Consulate co-hosted a traditional crafts exhibition, "Ishikawa Style" with Ishikawa prefecture at Manhattan's Nippon Club. New York Celebrates the Anniversary of Japan-NYC Ties in Style
Summer 2010 is the 150th anniversary of the historic visit to the Big Apple by a delegation of 76 samurai in 1860. To commemorate this landmark anniversary and to celebrate the birth of Japan-NYC friendship a number of anniversary-themed events took place throughout the month of June.

Samurai in the Park: Japan Day 2010
The annual Japan Day @ Central Park festivities kicked off on Sunday, June 6th, as New York's biggest, best-loved summer Japanese festival returned to Central Park for the fourth year running.

Ambassador Nishimiya Visits Buffalo
At the end of May, Ambassador Shinichi Nishimiya made his first official visit to Western New York State, holding a reception for people promoting cooperation between Japan and the local community in the Buffalo metropolitan area

On the evening of March 23, the Consulate General of Japan in New York and the Japan National Tourism Organization hosted a reception at the Ambassador’s residence celebrating the Visit Japan Campaign and the related Visit Japan Year 2010 project.

On February 26th, the Consulate General of Japan in New York hosted a reception at the Ambassador’s official residence to promote the “Washoku – Try Japan’s Good Food” campaign.

On November 3rd, 2009, Dr. Richard Wood, Professor and Dean Emeritus of Yale University Divinity School and the former President of Japan Society, was honored with one of Japan’s highest decorations, The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, for his outstanding contributions to the promotion of educational and cultural exchange between Japan and the United States.

Mr. Nobuyoshi Kuraoka, President of Wako International Corporation and the owner of Restaurant Nippon, was honored with The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, for his outstanding contributions to the promotion of Japanese culture through Japanese food.

On December 22nd, 2009, a reception was held for alumni who graduated from Japanese Weekend School of New York, New Jersey and Princeton. These alumni members have been living in the United States since graduation. Also included were members of the Board of Trustees from each school who work for companies affiliated with Japan. Lastly current staff members from each school also attended.

Professor Jeanette C. Takamura, Dean of the Columbia University School of Social Work was honored with The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, for her outstanding contributions to the promotion of social welfare policies and programs and the status of Japanese Americans on November 3rd, 2009.

On November 23rd, Ambassador and Mrs. Nishimiya invited Governor Joe Manchin III, First Lady Gayle C. Manchin, and other senior officials from West Virginia to attend a dinner meeting with top U.S.-based executives from 16 leading Japanese corporations and business organizations.

On November 19th, Mr. Akira Sugiyama, Deputy Consul-General of Japan and Director of the Japan Information Center in New York visited Stony Brook University by the invitation of the Japan Center of the University. He gave a speech on Japan-US Relations at the Theater of the University which was filled by approximately 150 faculty members including senior officers ...

On November 17, Mr. Mamoru Takahara, Music Director & Conductor of The New York Symphonic Ensemble, was honored with the 2009 Foreign Minister's Commendation for his contribution to promote mutual understanding and cultural exchange between Japan and United States of America through music.

On November 15th, eight members of the ‘Shibusawa Mission of Young Business Leaders 2009’ from Japan participated in a panel discussion with students from two world-class business schools, Columbia Business School and NYU Stern School, and members of the Japanese business community in New York. The event was hosted by Ambassador Nishimiya at his official residence.

On November 13th, Ambassador and Consul-General Shinichi Nishimiya awarded the Consul-General's Commendation to New York Yankee and 2009 World Series MVP, Hideki Matsui at the Ambassador's official residence in Manhattan.

On October 28th, an exhibition promoting Tottori Prefecture as "The Food Capital of Japan" was held at Ambassador Nishimiya's residence on the Upper East Side. The event was jointly organized by the Tottori Prefectural Government and the Consulate General of Japan in New York.

On October 17, a welcome back reception hosted by the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations (CLAIR) and the Consulate General of Japan was held for Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET) participants at the Nippon Club. The JET participants recently returned from Japan after completing their stints as Assistant Language Teachers (ALT) or Coordinators for International Relations (CIR) in various locations throughout Japan.

On July 24, the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET) Farewell Reception 2009 was held at the residence of Ambassador Nishimiya. This year, 106 participants from the New York area departed for Japan to assume positions as Assistant Language Teachers (ALT) and as Coordinators for International Relations (CIR) in various locations throughout Japan.

This summer, the Young People’s Chorus of New York City (YPC) will perform during a four-week tour across Japan. Just before their departure, Ambassador Nishimiya hosted a send-off reception and orientation on July 9th at his residence.

Professor Setsuko Matsunaga Nishi of the City University of New York was honored with The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon by the Government of Japan for her outstanding and lifelong contributions to the promotion of civil rights, sociological study, and well-being of Japanese Americans on April 29th, 2009.

"Today the East Meadow comes alive with the sights, sounds, and tastes of Japan," Japan Day Honorary Chairman, Ambassador Shinichi Nishimiya, Consul General of Japan in New York, announced from the stage of Japan Day @ Central Park 2009 on Sunday May 31st.

Mr. Yoshisada Yonezuka, President of the Judo Karate Center Inc. in New Jersey, and former head coach of US Olympic judo teams, was honored with The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette for his outstanding contributions to the promotion of Judo.

Ms. Toshiko Calder of the Princeton Community Japanese Language School is Honored
Ms. Toshiko Calder, the chair of the board of directors of the Princeton Community Japanese Language School, was awarded the Consul General’s Commendation.

An Exhibition of Nature-inspired Paintings at Consulate of Japan NY
Terra Incognita(Realm of Unknown), by three abstract artists, will appear from March 3rd to March 30th. The collection of works by the artists, Noriko Yano, Koji Moriya, and Tom Moran, is an exhibition of nature-inspired monoprints、drawings and paintings.

An Exhibition of Sumi-e - ink and wash paintings At Consulate of Japan NY
This unique exhibition of ink and wash paintings known as sumi-e in Japanese will introduce visitors to the distinctive beauty of Japanese paper (washi) and brush painting.

The Japanese Foreign Minister's Commendation Award to the Japanese Medical Society of America.
In 2008, the Japanese Medical Society of America (JMSA) received a commendation from the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Japan, and the award was delivered to the JMSA by the Ambassador Motoatsu Sakurai in New York.

Graduates of the Japanese Weekend Schools in Greater New York Reunite.
On November 26, Ambassador Sakurai hosted a reception at his residence,inviting graduates of the Japanese Weekend Schools of New York and New Jersey, and the Princeton Community Japanese Language School, who currently reside in the US.

Ambassador Hosts Japan-U.S. Networking Event for Young Business People
On November 7th, the Consulate hosted a “Japan-U.S. Young Business People Networking Event” at Ambassador Sakurai’s residence. The event was held in collaboration with Columbia Business School’s Japan Business Association (JBA) and the Center on Japanese Economy and Business (CJEB).

Rena ‘Rusty’ Kanokogi, “Mother of Women’s Judo”, is Honored
On November 3, 2008, Rena ‘Rusty’ Kanokogi, President, NY State Judo, Inc., was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette for her outstanding contributions to the promotion of judo. The conferment ceremony took place at Ambassador Sakurai’s residence on November 24th.

On October 27th, the Consulate General of Japan in New York co-hosted a fair at the Ambassador’s official residence promoting the City of Hiroshima as a destination for international conferences and other types of tourism.

2008 Foreign Minister's Commendations
On July 11, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan announced the recipients (54 individuals and 26 organizations) of the Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendations for 2008.

The Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET) Farewell Reception 2008 was held on Friday, July 25th at the residence of Ambassador Sakurai.Through the JET program, 120 participants from the New York area departed for Japan on Saturday, July 26th with great hopes and expectations....

On Sunday June 1, the center of Manhattan was transformed for the second time into a Japanese summer celebration. On a day blessed with wonderful weather, Japan Day @ Central Park 2008 featured the Japan Run and a Japan Day Festival...

On June 3rd, Ambassador Motoatsu Sakurai invited Governor Edward G. Rendell, Honorary Consul General Dennis J. Morikawa and other senior officials from Pennsylvania, along with top executives from leading Japanese-owned corporations...

Fine Kaga Cuisine from Ishikawa Prefecture On February 20th, Ambassador Sakurai's official residence was transformed into a top-tier restaurant for a night when the Consulate General of Japan co-hosted a special tasting event with the Ishikawa Prefectural Government. It featured a gathering of some of the most famous names from the New York restaurant world.

Dr. George Packard Honored by Government of Japan
Dr. George R. Packard, US-Japan Foundation, was honored with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star for his lifelong achievements aimed at fostering friendship and advancing understanding between Japan and the United States, on November 3rd, 2008.

Government of Japan Honors Mr. Philippe de Montebello
On November 3rd, 2007, Philippe de Montebello, Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was honored with one of the highest Japanese decorations, The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star; for his outstanding contributions to the introduction and development of the arts and culture of Japan.

Smooth as Melting Snow: The Akita Sake & Products Fair”
On November 9th, the Consulate co-hosted the Akita Sake & Products Fair with the Akita Sake Club at the Ambassador's official residence.

Edo on the East Side
An event promoting the city of Kawagoe’s tourist attractions, culture, and a variety of local products was held at Ambassador Sakurai’s residence on October 30th.

Local Centenarians Honored by Japanese Government
As part of “Respect for the Aged Day” a commendation ceremony was held to honor two residents of New Jersey who celebrated their 100th birthdays.

The Japanese American Association of New York is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year, and as a part of the celebration, it will host a special 10-day event called “Senior Week” beginning September 13th.

JAA Marks a Century of Service with Gala and “Senior Week”
The Japanese American Association of New York marked a landmark 100 years of service to the community with a gala black-tie fundraiser on September 29th.

Stronger Ties between West Virginia and Japanese Corporations
Ambassador Sakurai welcomed West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin III to New York for a meeting with Japanese corporate leaders on October 9th.

Sadako and the 9/11 Tribute
According to Japanese legend, anyone who folds one thousand paper cranes will be granted a wish, and Sadako set about folding paper cranes hoping to prolong her life and as a wish for peace and a world without nuclear weapons.

This August, two Japan-related events were held in Puerto Rico, the land of everlasting summer, the 18th World Children’s Baseball Festival (WCBF) and a commendation ceremony to award a Consul General’s Award.

Music from Japan was honored with the 2007 Foreign Minister's Commendation for its achievements furthering mutual understanding and friendship between the people of Japan and the United States of America.

Taking Pop Culture Seriously:In May, the International Manga Award was established and the first International Manga Award Executive Committee was created. The award aims to honor Manga artists who contribute to the promotion of Manga overseas.

Honors for Achievements Building Japan-US Ties
The following people and organizations received awards between April and June of this year to recognize their outstanding achievements and contributions to the Japan - US relationship.

Japan Day @ Central Park, which was held on Sunday, June 3rd in Central Park, was a great success. 5,000 runners enrolled and competed in the 4-mile “Japan Run,” and there were about 14,000 people present for the “Japan Day Festival” on Rumsey Playfield.

A lecture by Theater Director, Amon Miyamoto, was held at the residence of the Consul General of Japan, Ambassador Sakurai on Tuesday May 8th.

As part of its 100th anniversary, Japan Society in New York is holding “Noh ~ NOW!” an examination of historical transitions in Noh theater.

Following Washington DC’s National Cherry Blossom Festival, cherry blossom festivals will bloom in various places in the New York region.

Japanese Food Culture Festival
The Japanese Food Culture Festival in New York was held March 4th through March 10th.

The New York Representative Office of the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) will participate in the Japan booth at the New York Times Travel Show this year. JNTO’s participation will be part of its Visit Japan Campaign for promoting tourism.

The Attic (The Play Company)
The Play Company will have its English-Language premiere performance of The Attic written by Yoji Sakate. The Play Company is an international theatre, which introduces New Yorkers to plays scripted by writers from all over the world.

Rakugo Comedy Storytelling by Katsura Koharudanji at the Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture.  Rakugo, a comedic storytelling performance, by Katsura Koharudanji, will be shown at the Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture, Columbia University on Thursday, February 8th.

MINORU SAITO RECEIVES BLUE WATER MEDAL

The Cruising Club of America, a prestigious 84-year-old sailing organization dedicated to the “adventurous use of the sea”, awarded its 2006 Blue Water Medal to one of Japan’s top sailors, Minoru Saito.

ABDUCTION: Megumi Yokota Story
Just a few days before its New York premiere, Abduction: The Megumi Yokota Story, an award-winning US Documentary film was shown on January 8th at the Dag Hammarskjold Library auditorium in the United Nations headquarters. The film tells the story of Megumi Yokota who was abducted in 1977 by North Korea when she was 13 years old.

New York City Opera is making its first Japan Tour this May, as part of the official cultural program of the U.S. Pavilion at the Aichi World EXPO 2005.
 

On February 29th, the "2005 Japanese Language Contest" for high school students was held at University of Pittsburgh. The primary purpose of this annual event is to enrich the students' exposure to Japan and enhance their understanding of Japanese culture.  (02/29/05)

"Heisei Nakamura-za" Kabuki Performance at Lincoln Center. The kabuki performance presented by Heisei Nakamura-za company was the most lavish component of Lincoln Center Festival 2004. (07/25-27/04)

Cherry Blossom Festival in Philadelphia, PA.
On April 4th, an opening ceremony and a tree planting ceremony of the annual Cherry Blossom Festival was organized by Japan Society of Greater Philadelphia (JSGP), and was held in Fairmont Park, Philadelphia.(04/04/04)

Prime Minister Koizumi and Former NY Mayor Giuliani at Major League Opener in Tokyo
The New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays opened the Major League season at the Tokyo Dome on March 30. Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and the former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani were on hand to throw out the first pitches. (03/30/04)

JET AA International Conference in New York
The 2004 JET Alumni Association International Conference took place from February 26 to 29 in New York City. Approximately 50 country and chapter representatives from around the world participated the four-day conference.

Panel Discussion on the new film The Last Samurai.
As part of this year's ongoing celebration of 150 years of Japan-U.S. relations, filmmaker Ed Zwick, director of The Last Samurai, the film's producer, Marshall Herskovitz and Columbia University Professor Carol Gluck participated in a panel discussion at the Ambassador's residence on the evening of November 10th. The famed jazz pianist and bandleader Toshiko Akiyoshi and her Jazz Orchestra will be giving their farewell concert at Carnegie Hall on October 17th.
The 30th anniversary performance will also be the last for Ms. Akiyoshi and her Jazz Orchestra. Akiyoshi said, "It is my sincere wish that our swan song concert will leave (the audience) with some special, and hopefully, uplifting feeling."(9/24/03)
"Whispering Winds of the Seasons"
This is a wonderful book full of scenery that is peculiar to Japan, and the graceful poems that makes your heart warm. In this second edition, Ms. Teruko Pace, a former president of the Japan Society in Fairfield County, Connecticut, translated the Japanese poems into English. (8/12/03)

American Bowl Kickoff
On June 4th, Ambassador Yoshihiro Nishida hosted a celebration reception at his residence for the upcoming American Bowl exhibition football game which will be played on August 2 in Tokyo between the New York Jets versus the 2003 Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. (6/4/03)
Japanese Network Honored With Prestigious Journalism Award.
Fuji Television Network, one of Japan's major broadcast companies, has been honored with a 2003 Peabody Award for it's probing investigative report "The Hepatitis C Epidemic: A 15-Year Government Cover-Up". (May, 2003)
A special reception in honor of Columbia University Professor Donald Keene was held at the Ambassador Nishida's residence on May 14 and Professor Keene delivered a lecture entitled "My Work Since Writing My Lifework." (5/14/03)
