Storytelling in Japanese Art

Featuring more than sixty works of art in a range of mediums and formats, this exhibition invites you to explore myriad subjects that have preoccupied the Japanese imagination for centuries-Buddhist and Shinto miracle tales; the romantic adventures of legendary heroes and their feats at times of war; animals and fantastical creatures that cavort within the human realm; and the ghoulish antics of ghosts and monsters.

Date Painting(s) in New York and 136 Other Cities by On Kawara
David Zwirner Gellery
525 West 19th Street, NYC For over four decades, On Kawara has created paintings, drawings, books, and recordings that examine
chronological time and its function as a measure of human existence. The artist began making his now signature
date paintings in 1966 in New York City, and continues to make them in different parts of the world. Following the
same basic procedure and format, each of these works is carefully executed by hand with the date documented
in the language and grammatical conventions of the country in which it is made (Esperanto is used when the
first language of a given country does not use the Roman alphabet). The artist has created a version of the sans
serif typeface, which he uses to meticulously paint the letters and numbers in white on a monochrome surface.
Each painting, when not on display, is encased in a cardboard box handmade by the artist. On certain days,
a newspaper clipping from the city in which the painting is executed is selected and used to line the interior
of the box.

Midori Furuhashi Explores the Nature of Love at Agora Gallery
Agora Gallery
530 West 25th St, New York Midori Furuhashi, dives deep into Japanese artistic tradition to create her one-of-a-kind, dreamily updated visions of the sublime. Employing the ancient materials of handmade paper and pigment derived from metal, shell, and rock, Furuhashi recreates the delicate, radiant tracery of the best-known Japanese pen-and-ink painters, such as Katsushika Hokusai. However, her addition of a female figure intertwined with flowers, animals, and symbolic elements is unmistakably modern and irrepressibly imaginative, showing her vision beyond the confines of tradition.

Poetic Pastimes
Japan and the Art of Leisure Newark Museum
49 Washington Street Newark, New Jersey Poetic Pastimes: Japan and the Art of Leisure brings to life the Japanese passion for play and it's long-held affinity with nature through more than 100 pieces of fine and decorative arts spanning the last two and a half centuries. The pursuit of pleasure and self-cultivation has been central to Japanese life and culture since the development of an aristocratic court life in the classical Heian period (794-1185). Leisure activity across social classes was elevated to a refined art form based on highly ritualized behavior and mediations on nature and the transition of seasons-the migration of birds, blossoming flowers and trees, autumn foliage under a harvest moon and brances laden with snow.
