On February 13th, 2019, the Conferment Ceremony of the Foreign Minister's Commendation for Mr. David Harris, the Chief Executive Officer of the American Jewish Committee(@AJCGlobal) took place at the residence of Ambassador Yamanouchi.

Mr. Harris was awarded for his extraordinary leadership in promoting of mutual understanding and friendship between #Japan and the #JewishCommunity.

Over the last 30 years, Mr. Harris has regularly visited Japan. In particular, in 2016 and 2017, he served as the head of the official AJC delegation and met with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to discuss ways to strengthen relations between Japan and the AJC.

As well, Mr. Harris has fought tirelessly for human rights, continuing AJC's mission of protecting civil liberties. Particularly notable was AJC’s support – the first non-Japanese American organization to do so – of the redress movement for Japanese Americans who had been incarcerated during WWII, which led to the passage of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988.

The Foreign Minister's Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in the international community to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendly relations between Japan and other countries.

この度，平成３０年度（２０１８年度）外務大臣表彰としてデイヴィッド・ハリス米国ユダヤ人委員会理事長が表彰されました。
この表彰は，我が国と諸外国との友好親善関係の増進に多大な貢献のあった個人及び団体の中で，特に顕著な功績を称えるものです。

デイヴィッド・ハリス氏は，全米及び世界各国に６０以上の拠点を持つ，全米最古のユダヤ人団体の一つである米国ユダヤ人員会（ＡＪＣ）の理事長を長年勤め，日・ユダヤ社会の理解と友好関係増進に貢献しています。ハリス氏はこれまで３０年間に渡り数多く訪日していますが，特に，２０１６年及び２０１７年にはＡＪＣ公式訪日代表団長として安倍総理と会談を行い、日・ユダヤ有効関係の一層の深化のために意見交換を行いました。また，同氏は，ＡＪＣワシントン支局長時代に日系人のリドレス（戦後補償）法案通過を支援したとされており，米国の日系人社会に対しても顕著に貢献してきていることなどが今回の受賞理由となりました。

ハリス氏に対する表彰式は，２月１３日，在ニューヨーク日本国大使公邸において行われ，関係者約３０名の見守る中，山野内勘二大使から同氏に対して表彰状が授与されました。
