Conferment of Decorations for 2021 Autumn

令和3年秋の叙勲

On November 3rd, 2021, the Government of Japan announced the recipients of its Autumn 2021 Decorations which include two distinguished U.S. citizens from the area under the jurisdiction of the Consulate General of Japan in New York.

Contributed to strengthening bilateral relations and promoting friendship between Japan and the United States

Ambassador Kennedy was appointed as the first female US Ambassador to Japan in November 2013. During her posting of about three years, she greatly contributed to the promotion of friendship and mutual understanding between Japan and the United States through a number of historical exchanges of dignitaries between the two countries and actively built relationships with a wide range of Japanese people by visiting 35 prefectures. To name a few of her achievements, she supported the reconstruction efforts of the areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, strengthened the Japan-US Security Arrangements and tackled the issue of realignment of U.S. Forces in Japan, realized President Obama’s visit to Hiroshima and Prime Minister Abe’s visit to Pearl Harbor, and promoted women’s empowerment in Japan. Even after her post as Ambassador to Japan ended, she continues to promote cultural exchange between Japan and the United States.

Mr. Carter is a prominent American jazz double bassist and an internationally renowned musical artist who has won two Grammy Awards (for Best Instrumental Composition in 1988 and Best Jazz Instrumental Performance in 1995). He has popularized jazz in Japan and promoted cultural exchange between Japan and the United States through various activities including collaboration with a number of Japanese musicians, performance at the Consulate’s event on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, and by nurturing the development of Japanese musicians as an educator. He has greatly contributed to promoting friendly relations between Japan and the United States through music.
