MS. SUKI PORTS, JAPANESE AMERICAN COMMUNITY LEADER, HONORED WITH THE CONSUL GENERAL'S COMMENDATION

For championing the equality of rights and social services for the Japanese and Japanese Americans in the U.S., Ms. Suki Terada Ports was awarded the Consul General's Commendation by Ambassador Shigeyuki Hiroki on March 12th, 2013.

The prominent community leader and native New Yorker was honored at a special conferment ceremony and festive reception held at the Ambassador's residence. Many friends, family members and colleagues from a diverse array of social institutions attended, including Mayor David Dinkins and Councilwoman Gale Brewer. Ms. Ports expressed gratitude to all those who have been her longtime supporters.

As a pioneer in the battle against HIV/AIDS since the 1980s, Ms. Ports co-founded APICHA, the Asian Pacific Islander Coalition Against HIV/AIDS, which expanded healthcare services to those in affected Asian communities, including Japanese and Japanese American populations.
She was also commended for her impassioned work in bringing diverse communities closer together, thereby strengthening the bonds between Japan and the U.S. Ms. Ports, as a Vice President of the Japanese American Association of New York, has organized Japanese sociocultural events which preserve Japanese traditions, while introducing them to multicultural audiences in the U.S.
