Professor Makino not only has conducted 45 years of extensive and profound research on Japanese language education and linguistics, but also has been teaching Japanese language education by utilizing the research achievements gained at the prestigious U.S. educational institutions with Japanese language programs such as Ilinois University, Princeton University and Harvard University. In addition, he has been acting as academic director of the intensive Summer M.A. Program of Japanese Pedagogy at the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University.
Professor Makino has published prominent books on Japanese language education which are not only used throughout the U.S. but also worldwide. Foremost among them, "Kodansha's English-Japanese Dictionary" and "A Dictionary of Advanced Japanese Grammar" are considered must-read masterpieces. He also wrote one of the most sound textbooks on the Japanese language, entitled, the"Nakama"series.
Professor Makino has contributed to the overall development and the promotion of Japanese language education in the U.S. He has performed important duties as a member of the Editorial Advisory Board, Journal of the Association of Teachers of Japanese, and as the President of the Association of Teachers of Japanese. For those valuable merits, Professor Makino has been recognized for his distinguished service by Harvard University, the Association of the Departments of Foreign Languages, and the Society for Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language. In addition, he has been Director of Princeton-in-Ishikawa during summer and as part of the screening committee for The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program.
