The strategic environment in the Asia-Pacific region has been going through a tectonic shift over the past two decades, with the historic rise of China. The presence and the role of the United States in the Asia-Pacific have been the main source of stability and reassurance for many regional states. However, with the emergence of the Trump Administration, this strategic balance may change. Japan's strategic dependence on the United States makes it uniquely vulnerable at this time of great uncertainty.
