Traditional Elegance in High Fashion

Japanese Kimono have a rich history and have long been admired for their elegance and beauty. Now, kimono are finding new expression through modern fashion with the potential to become a kind of universal formal wear that transcends cultural and ethnic boundaries.

Kouichi Fujii, the President of Fujii Shibori, a Kyoto based kimono textile company with a hundred year history, will discuss the history of kimono, how master craftsmen skillfully create their elaborate works of art, and the obstacles to and opportunities for the global acceptance of kimono. The lecture will be moderated by Monika Bincsik, Assistant Curator in the Department of Asian Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The lecture will be accompanied by a kimono show where you can see many beautiful kimono and a reception will be held afterward. If you have your own kimono, please dress up for the occasion!
