On December 1st, 2020, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan announced the awardees of the Foreign Minister's Commendations for 2020, including Ambassador Josette Sheeran, President and CEO of Asia Society.

The Foreign Minister's Commendations are awarded to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in the international community to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendly relations between Japan and other countries.

Ambassador Sheeran was awarded for her contributions to the promotion of mutual understanding between Japan and the United States of America. She is the seventh President and CEO of Asia Society, which is the leading educational organization dedicated to promoting mutual understanding and strengthening partnerships among peoples, leaders, and institutions of Asia and the United States in a global context. After her accession to the office in 2013, she led a number of initiatives to strengthen the relationship between Japan and her organization. In 2016, for Asia Society’s 60 years anniversary, she held a series of arts, culture, policy and business events entitled “Season of Japan” for 4 months. In 2018, under her strong leadership, the Asia Society Japan Center, located at the International House of Japan, opened and has actively been disseminating Japan’s perspectives in various fields.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan recognizes her distinguished services in contributing to the deepening of mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and the United States of America. This award serves as a clear expression of gratitude and respect for these remarkable achievements.
