JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: Seeking an individual for the position of Social Media Expert

The Japan Information Center at the Consulate General of Japan in New York is seeking a team-oriented individual for the position of Social Media Expert. The main duties for this role are to assist with the planning, creation, and uploading of our Consulate’s social media posts in line with the Consulate’s priorities and public relations needs. Service agreement for this position will run from October 17, 2026 (TBC) until the end of March 2027. This is an in-office position; working hours are from 9:15am to 6:00pm, Monday through Friday (working hours are negotiable as needed). The hourly pay is $26 for the contracted period.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with Japan-related social media posts both in terms of content planning and technical aspects (such as creating graphics, filming and editing photos and videos, and writing text for the posts)
  • Analyzing the Consulate’s social media accounts and providing suggestions for improving posts and engagement
  • Online searches for Japan-related events/articles to share on the Consulate’s social media accounts
  • Various administrative tasks related to the Consulate’s public relations efforts and cultural events
  • Respond to and follow up with public inquiries by phone and email
  • Other duties as deemed necessary
 

Requirements:

  • At least two years of college education
  • Valid work permit (*Our Consulate cannot provide or sponsor a work permit.)
  • Professional proficiency in English
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills with flexibility and professionalism
  • Enthusiastic interest in Japanese culture. Japanese language ability is a plus.
  • Deep knowledge and experience with social media platforms (Facebook, X, Instagram etc.)
  • Extensive skills and experience in taking and editing photos and videos, as well as in graphic design
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Canva. Knowledge of Adobe (Premiere Pro, InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator) is a plus
 

Ideal Candidate:

  • Has prior experience in public relations using social media
  • Has professional experience in shooting and editing photos and videos, and/or in graphic design
  • Is a team-oriented individual who is capable of multitasking and prioritizing varying duties with deadlines
  • Has prior work experience in Japan or at a Japanese company and understands Japanese work culture
