Conferment of Decorations for 2023 Autumn

On November 3rd, 2023, the Government of Japan announced the recipients of its Autumn 2023 Decorations, who include two distinguished U.S. citizens from within the jurisdiction of the Consulate General of Japan in New York.

Services: Contributed to promoting intellectual exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and the United States
Dr. Haass served for 20 years as President of the Council on Foreign Relations, a diplomatic think tank dedicated to the study and analysis of world affairs, whose membership includes many former U.S. presidents and key cabinet members of past administrations. Throughout his career, Dr. Haass has enhanced mutual understanding and friendship between the United States and Japan, and has promoted understanding the importance of the U.S.-Japan alliance within the international community. His work has also asserted the international role that Japan plays through the publication of Foreign Affairs Magazine, a global political and economic journal produced by the Council on Foreign Relations.

Professor Weinstein, the Carl S. Shoup Professor of the Japanese Economy, has authored numerous articles on the Japanese economy and has demonstrated deep academic knowledge in his area of expertise. He serves as the Director of the Center on Japanese Economy and Business, Graduate School of Business, Columbia University, a research center dedicated to the study of the Japanese economy and its business system. He has been instrumental in promoting the study of the Japanese economy in the United States. For many years, he has promoted research exchanges between Japan and the U.S. by speaking at international conferences where Japanese economists, government officials, and U.S. economists have shared ideas. These efforts have improved the overall quality of discourse on the Japanese economy as well as Japan’s economic policies.
