On Sunday, January
16th the annual New Year's Event of Japan
Society of Fairfield County was held at the
Plum Tree Restaurant in New Canaan, CT.
Approximately sixty guests attended the
festive event.
After the introductory remarks by Ms. Judy
Neville, Mayor of New Canaan, and Mr. Yukihiro
Nikaido, Director of the Japan Information
Center at the Consulate General of Japan in
New York, the guests enjoyed eating a
delicious "osechi" (Japanese traditional New
Year meal) -inspired lunch. Luncheon was
followed by a Japanese dance performance
presented by nine-year old Ms. Alice Kaoru
McDonald. The guests were all fascinated by
Ms. McDonald's charming and graceful movements
as she danced to a kabuki piece called "Fujimusume".
Another highlight of the day was the
mochitsuki demonstration. Mr. Yoshiyuki
Muratani of Greenwich Japanese School taught
the participants how to pound the steamed rice
paste. The guests got turns in holding the
kine (mallets), pounding the rice paste, and
experience making their own mochi covered with
kinako (mixture of sugar and ground soy bean)
or anko (red bean paste).
