Aikobo Exhibition in the Consulate General of Japan in New York
This exhibition, undertaken with the cooperation of the Consulate General of Japan in New York, displays Japanese arts and crafts from traditions that have been carried on and further developed by disabled members of Aikobo, a social welfare institution with a thirty-year history located in Setagaya Ward.
The works in the current exhibition are made up of indigo-dyed cloth and of needlework made by disabled members of Aikobo. The member artists would have a level of disability that would make employment in society difficult, but through a system of support learn the traditional crafts of their nation, and produce, exhibit, and sell their works, thus promoting independent living and giving opportunity for self-expression.
