1996- Resumed and Expanded its Japanese Language Program
Presently Offering Full-Fledged, High Quality Japanese Language Program from Middle School to High School Levels
Achievements:
The Japanese language programs offered at Clarkstown Central School District were the first such programs at the high school level in New York State in 1963. Resumed in 1996, then expanded thereafter, the program has contributed to the development and advancement of Japanese language education in New York State as well as to the promotion of mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and the United States.
The school district currently maintains excellent and full-fledged Japanese language programs at the majority of its schools. Middle school to high school students are offered Japanese classes which range from the beginners' level to the college equivalent of advanced programs. The Japanese language program of the district focuses not only on middle and high schools but also appeals to elementary school students. The district is operating "Little Tor Japanese Program" and "Woodglen Japanese Program" by which high school students learning the Japanese language can participate in a teaching internship after school to teach younger students at elementary schools.
The Clarkstown Central School District has actively carried out exchanges with educational institutions connected with Japan, and has maintained collaborations with Greenwich Japanese School at the high school level for over 10 years. The district has also successfully concluded a sister-school agreement with Yuhigaoka High School in Osaka Prefecture by arranging mutual home-stay exchanges constructed up to the present. In addition, middle and high schools in this district have created Japan-associated student organizations, such as "Japan Clubs" and "Taiko Team," which are very active. The Japan-associated exchanges by these groups, as well as the Japanese program mentioned, contribute greatly to the understanding and promotion of friendship between Japan and the U.S.
