The Japan Center was established in 2003 at Stony Brook University for the purpose of enhancing education and studies about Japanese culture, society and the lives of Japanese and Japanese Americans. The Center has hosted lectures, events and programs to deepen the understanding of Japan-U.S. culture as well as to promote cultural exchanges.
Japan Center Achievements:
JCSB has fostered cross-cultural understanding on campus and throughout the local community. It has organized the Japan Essay Competition and public lectures on Japan, as well as Japanese cultural events such as its annual Sakura Matsuri and traditional cultural performances like kabuki.
Additionally, at the time of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake in Tohoku and the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, JCSB engaged in charity events in support of the victims as well as having organized awareness-raising lectures on natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis.
