1. General History
1898：The Madison House was founded by two young German Jews in 1898 to provide social services for low-income immigrants.
1902：The Hamilton House was established in 1902 to help new Italian immigrants who were suffering from tuberculosis.
1954：The Madison House and Hamilton House merged to become the Hamilton-Madison House.
1983： Nichibei Counseling Center was established, specializing in mental health care for Japanese people.

2. Overview of Achievements:
Hamilton-Madison House is a historic Settlement House located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Since its inception, our organization has been committed to providing social services for Asian New Yorkers of all ages, from a child to aging people. In 1983, it opened the first Japanese out-patient mental health clinic in the northeast United States. Today it remains the only not-for-profit Japanese mental health clinic (Nichibei Counseling Center) on the east coast.

Mental Health Services are provided in Japanese by our culturally and linguistically competent licensed clinicians. The Japanese Clinic serves a very diverse clientele; for example, young Japanese students and artists seeking to build successful lives in the United States, Japanese women who are victims of domestic violence and Japanese expats and their families who suffer from depression and adjustment disorders. Many Japanese in New York experienced post-traumatic stress disorder in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Hamilton-Madison House Japanese Clinic helped significantly, and responded to the needs of the Japanese community by offering free counseling and mental health services. Each year the Hamilton-Madison House Japanese Clinic(Nichibei Counseling Center) serves more than 100 patients.
