In 1912, an incredible gift of thousands of cherry blossom trees was bestowed on the United States by Japan. On April 28th, 1912, some 3,000 Japanese cherry trees were also gifted to New York CityThe cherry blossom, or sakura in Japanese, is one of the most popular symbols of Japan and one of Japan's national flowers. Today, sakura trees are planted in parks across the United States and have become a living symbol of Japan-U.S. friendship.
