Overview of Achievements
For 25 years at the City University of NY's Hunter College, Professor Kawashima has been contributing to the advancement of Japanese studies in the United States by being the heart of Japanese learning at the prominent learning institution. There, she began teaching in 1988, only 2 years after the establishment of the Japanese Studies program at the college.

Professor Kawashima went on to successfully found the Japanese Program and to institutionally expand Japanese coursework at Hunter College into a Japanese Studies Division in 2002, which includes classes in both Japanese language and cultural studies.

The creation of the division has boosted the number of classes offered at Hunter College, enabling students to obtain degrees with Japanese Studies as their major under the CUNY-wide system of combining credits acquired at Hunter together with those obtained at other CUNY colleges. At present, there are approximately 400 students pursuing Japan-related courses at CUNY's Hunter College, and the college has fixed itself firmly as one of the prominent centers for Japanese Studies amongst the Japanese programs within the CUNY system.

Furthermore, Professor Kawashima has been designated as a screening committee member for the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET) at the Consulate General of Japan in New York. The JET program offers Americans opportunities to work as English-teaching assistants at public schools in Japan. In this regard, Professor Kawashima has not only contributed to the development of Japanese Studies in the United States but has also served as a bridge of friendship between the people of Japan and the United States.
