Chelsea Music Festival Celebrating Japan-US Cherry Blossom Centennial
June 6, 2012
We are happy to announce that the Consulate General of Japan in New York is supporting this year's Chelsea Music Festival taking place in various galleries in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood from June 14th to 23rd.
Chelsea Music Festival started in 2010 with a vision of celebrating great music in dynamic venues with the world's leading musicians and exciting newcomers on the international music stage. The Festival also explores the interplay of art forms – in particular the musical, visual and culinary arts – and connects artists, composers and concertgoers to one another in intimate settings.
This year, the Festival features Japan and France celebrating
Japan-US Cherry Blossom Centennial and the 150th anniversary of Claude Debussy. It will also commemorate the victims of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan last year.
Many pieces by notable Japanese classical and contemporary composers will be performed during the Festival. Notable among these are the world premier of SAGA, one of several featured pieces by Somei Satoh, and Koji Nakano's solo flute piece written in commemoration of the 3/11 earthquake and tsunami victims, entitled After the Gentle Wind….
There will also be many fun events including visual arts exhibitions, family events at galleries and free open door public programs at the Highline, Union Square and Hudson River Park.
