Ms. Hata joined the Sogetsu School USA in 1960. She became a member of Ikebana International’s New York Chapter in 1965 and has been an active board member of the chapter for more than 50 years.
The Consul General of Japan in New York conferred her with the Consul General’s commendation in 2014, for her remarkable contributions to the promotion of mutual cultural understanding between Japan and the United States through her teaching of Ikebana.

(1) Ms. Hata has been an active board member of Ikebana International’s New York Chapter for over 50 years and has served twice as President of the chapter (from 1978-79 and 1993-95). As a member, she used Ikebana exhibitions and demonstrations to lead various Japanese cultural events, and has also participated in many flower shows. Through ikebana, and in other significant ways, she has contributed to the introduction of Japanese culture to Americans.
(2) Ms. Hata has been quite active in introducing Ikebana and Japanese culture not only in New York City, but also in rural areas. She, as a member of Ikebana international, has taught and demonstrated Ikebana in dozens of cities around the U.S. In 1993, she also published a photobook of her work entitled, "FLOWERS ARE EAST AND WEST".
